Can Dutchy Keep It Up?

Two weeks in to the County Championship and Ian ‘Dutchy’ Holland has had perhaps the biggest workload in the country: captaining the side, batting at number three and opening the bowling. With four consecutive matches coming up, including three on the road, Oliver Shouksmith looks at how sustainable this will be.

Ian Holland, last year’s star for the Foxes with 38 wickets and almost 500 runs, will be crucial to his side’s success in 2026 once more. After the late withdrawal of Pete Handscomb due to injury, it was announced that he would in fact take the reins of the team, after briefly doing so to end the 2025 season.

While he is certainly a capable captain, it is quite possible that to lead the side, bat number three and open the bowling is going to stack up and weigh heavily on his performance. Leicestershire will want him firing on all cylinders and, while he has began the year in fine fashion ball in hand, his batting hasn’t flourished yet (he is yet to score over 20 in three innings).

With Holland expected to feature in all three formats as well as travelling to his native country to feature in the MLC (Major League Cricket), should he continue playing the role that he has so far it would represent an extraordinary workload. This could begin to have a negative effect on his performance on and off the field and Foxes’ management will be desperate to avoid this.
