Leicestershire Women began their season with an impressive victory over Sussex Sharks Women in a rain-affected match in the Metro Bank Women’s One Cup League 2 at Grace Road.

The Foxes Women controlled much of the contest with both bat and ball and largely deserved to come away with the points that at one point were threatened to be shared, chasing down a reduced score of 107 from 16 overs with an over to spare, thanks to the calm head of new signing Lucy Western who came back to haunt her old club with 38 from 27 balls.

It was the visitors that won the toss and decided to bat with perhaps one eye on the weather, but after being reduced to 4-2 inside the first three overs of the competition as left-arm seamer Emma Thatcher got the Foxes off to the perfect start.

When strike bowling partner Ellie Phillips joined the party, after a smart leg-side catch from Western behind the stumps that left Sussex as 27-3, you can be forgiven for thinking that the Foxes had taken the heart out of the Sussex batting line-up inside 8 overs.
