Leicestershire's signing of Hamza Shaikh feels significant for reasons that go well beyond adding another talented young batter to the squad.
On the face of it, the Foxes have secured one of the brightest young prospects in county cricket. A 20-year-old who has already broken into Warwickshire's first team, represented England through the age groups and shown enough promise for the Bears to want to keep him.
The fact that Shaikh has turned down the offer of a new contract at Edgbaston to commit the next three years to Leicestershire should be viewed as a major statement. His 33 at Kibworth on Wednesday is exactly why the Foxes have signed the talented batter as he showed glimpses of what he can produce.
