When Leicestershire confirmed that Rishi Patel would leave Grace Road at the end of the season to join Hampshire, the initial reaction from supporters was one of disappointment rather than surprise.
The rumours had been circulating for long enough that the announcement almost felt inevitable, and yet that did little to soften the blow.
Patel's departure is significant because of the runs he will take with him, but perhaps even more because of what his decision says about where Leicestershire currently find themselves. Just twelve months ago the club appeared to be on an upward trajectory.
